QMA - West Indy

Purpose: To set up, administer, and record certain prescribed medications for residents in the facility under the supervision of a licensed nurse and perform other functions as taught in the QMA curriculum.

Qualifications:

1. Must be certified as Qualified Medication Aide in the State of Indiana.
2. Must complete a State approved training program in medication administration.
3. Must possess a current health certificate/examination as required by State
agencies.
4. Must perform only those duties that were taught in the approved training program.
Standards:
1. Must demonstrate good judgment in seeking guidance and supervision from
licensed personnel.
2. Mature and emotionally stable.
3. Must assume responsibility.
4. Has the desire to care for people, especially those who are elderly and chronically
ill.
5. Is capable of following instructions and can maintain records.
6. Ability to move throughout facility most of the day, at times moderate to heavy
lifting.
7. Ability to communicate orally.
8. Exhibit patience and tact in dealing with residents, families, visitors and
employees.
9. Ability to work under supervision and to cooperate with other staff.

Essential Job Functions:
1. Prepare and administer safely and document regularly prescribed oral medications
to residents.
2. Administer as allowed, oral PRN drugs when authorized by a licensed nurse.
3. Understand that injectable medications must always be given by a licensed nurse.
4. Demonstrate knowledge that the telephone or verbal orders may never be
accepted by a QMA.
5. Understand and demonstrate knowledge that appropriate vital signs will be taken
and recorded as required before administering certain medications.
6. Administer medications/treatments as taught per Indiana QMA curriculum.
7. Maintain an awareness of all procedures regarding incidents involving medication
8. Demonstrate initiative and responsibility for checking physician's order against
medication administration records.
9. Not to assume responsibility of transcription of orders.
10. Ensure a locked medication room and/or cart when it is unattended.
11. Contact Nurse, as needed, to report absences, schedule or change of rest breaks,
leave early, change work schedule, initial time sheet, change work station and
resolve job related problems.
12. Receive and give report at change of shift if applicable.
13. Report all pertinent observations to the Charge Nurse.
14. Alert the Charge Nurse when a resident condition is in need of assessment.

Other Job Functions:
1. Use of good judgment in administering medications as ordered by the physician.
2. Display ability in observing and reporting drug reaction commonly suffered by
residents.
3. Demonstrate knowledge in using the appropriate drug references.
4. Display an awareness of cleanliness and proper maintenance of all medication
carts/rooms and maintain a clean working environment.
5. Direct nursing assistants if applicable.
6. Perform other duties as described in the nursing assistant job description.
7. Attend required in-services.
8. Be alert to and safeguard the welfare of the residents.
9. Foster good relationships between employees, residents, families and physicians.
10. Every call light and alarm is yours to answer promptly and courteously. Consider
each light an emergency until answered.
11. Clean working areas and utility rooms. Clean and store equipment properly and
as scheduled.
12. Report and document any accident or incident involving a resident, employee or
visitor immediately to your supervisor.
13. All other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or designee.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:
1. Ability to read and write in English, ability to communicate with residents,
families, personnel and support agencies and ability to remain calm under stress.
2. Bending, lifting, walking, grasping, fine hand coordination, ability to distinguish
smells, tastes and temperatures, ability to hear and respond to pages.
