GENERAL FUNCTION

Under the direction and supervision of the Program Director, the Site Director is responsible for directing the Before and After School YMCA School Activities at the specified school. She/he will be responsible for the organization of the program and will relate directly to students, parents and school personnel. Schedule includes Before School Program hours, After School Program Hours, designated Office Hours, School's Out Camp, special events/training and may include Summer Day Camp.

KNOW HOW

  • A 4 year college degree in education preferred OR a minimum of 15 credit hours in education and 2-4 years experience working directly with children OR 24 hours training in YMCA of the USA National Child Care Courses and four years experience working directly with children.
  • A minimum of 21 years of age is required.
  • Recognize the social-emotional, cognitive, and physical milestones youth experience during their journey from birth to career. 
  • Recognize that all youth have individual needs, temperaments, characteristics, and abilities and develop at their own rate.
  • Organize, plan, and keep program records effectively.
  • Understanding of the goals and philosophy of the YMCA.
  • Maintain current certifications in CPR AED, First Aid, Safety and Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention, New Employee Orientation, Principles of Child Care, Working with 5-12 Year Olds, SACC Director, or the ability to obtain within 60-90 days of employment. Additional child care training also required for position.
  • Supervisory and administrative skills including supervision, training and evaluation of site staff and effective administration of the program at designated site location.

 PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designated as a First Responder in the event of an emergency.
  • Provide ongoing training and resources around youth development techniques and strategies for staff according to YMCA and program guidelines.
  • Use appropriate, safe, and fun activities based on participant age and ability.
  • Create a safe environment that helps all youth, volunteers, family and staff feel welcome and respected.
  • Actively implement regular evaluation of program goals, environment, and outcomes.
  • Partner with parents and caregivers, staff and external partners to support overall program outcomes (program and home support).
  • Plan, supervise, implement curriculum/activities and evaluate the program and related responsibilities (e.g. School's Out Program, Summer Day Camp, etc) in accordance with the goals of the YMCA Before and After School Program.  Curriculum includes, but is not limited to, family and parent engagement, health and wellness, academic enrichment, 21st Century skills, and Global Learning and Inclusion.
  • Must be at specified site for 90% of the time that it is open, arriving at least 10-15 minutes prior to its start.
  • Follow and maintain behavior management policies outlined by the Before and After School program and adhere to Child Abuse Prevention guidelines for the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis and reinforce same policies with site staff.
  • Continuously communicate effectively with parents, caregivers, and school personnel around program goals on a regular basis both verbally and through monthly parent newsletter.
  • Maintain current records on all children enrolled in the program, including attendance and emergency information.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and loyalty and conduct oneself in accordance with the YMCA Mission.
  • Have a complete knowledge of emergency procedures appropriate for the individual site to ensure the safety of all children.
  • Be responsible for the set-up, maintenance and tear down of site and maintain quality of supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Develop partnerships among staff, parents, and caregivers, and community organizations (schools, youth programs, etc.) to maximize program impact.
  • Notify Program Director in writing of planned absences at least 2 weeks in advance. (emergencies excluded).
  • Provide structured opportunities for staff and parents and caregivers to work together toward common goals for youth.
  • Maintain caring and respectful communication when addressing challenging concerns with families.
  • Actively participate in the Annual Campaign.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Assist with other projects or activities as needed.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand/sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and transport equipment
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to heat/humidity and cold conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants, parents, staff and volunteers
  • Ability to demonstrate and lead activities
  • Ability to solve, reason, make decisions and use sound judgment even when distracted by noise and activity.
  • Ability to physically and mentally respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.

MEMBER INVOLVEMENT SKILLS

  • Be informed and up to date on the latest developments in your field.
  • Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
  • Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
  • Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.
  • Support our YMCA annual campaign by inviting members to participate.
  • Be able to articulate the role and importance of volunteers.
  • Be informed about volunteer opportunities.
  • Provide an environment that values diversity and builds the 40 Developmental Assets and incorporates asset-building into your work at the YMCA.

EFFECT ON END RESULT

  1. Evidence that parent, participant and school satisfaction is occurring at the highest possible level through quality programs that reflect a positive image of the YMCA to the community.
  2. Achievement of an age appropriate environment that is conductive to the needs of children and families.
  3. Evidence of creative planning and programming by meeting deadlines, sufficient promotion and attainment of agreed upon goals.
  4. Consistent, high quality Before and After School program as reflected by positive responses on program evaluation forms
  5. Increase/Maintain participation in Before and After School Program at specified site.
  6. Individuals have learned new skills and have had their life enriched through the YMCA Before and After School Program experience
  7. Sound fiscal management observed through meeting or exceeding budgeted expectations evidenced through revenue production and expense control.
  8. Evidence of knowledge of Membership By Design, building small communities and asset-building within the program.
  9. Creation of a safe and nurturing environment for program participants, members, volunteers and staff.
  10. A strong mission-driven program with a clear commitment to character development and the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
